THE CUSTOMS OF SHAVUOT
THE MEANING OF SHAVUOT
The holiday Shavuot, literally meaning weeks, comes at the culmination of counting seven weeks from the Jewish holiday Passover. It notably marks the receiving of the Torah, the Jewish Bible, and the Ten Commandments. Contained within is a blueprint of moral and ethical precepts that has guided society until today. Shavuot is celebrated in the Jewish month of Sivan. It falls at the tail end of spring with the outlook towards summer and an abundant harvest. A time for new beginnings.
CHAG SHAVUOT – THE FESTIVAL OF WEEKS
Shavuot is observed on the sixth day of the Jewish month Sivan and on an additional day in the Diaspora. It arrives at the end of SFIRAT HA’OMER, the counting of 49 days after the second day of Passover. Shavuot is the 50th day.
Shavuot is one of the SHLOSHET HAREGALIM, the three occasions when the Jews in Biblical times pilgrimaged to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem – the other two being Sukkot and Passover.
CHAG MATAN TORAH – RECEIVING THE TORAH
Shavuot commemorates the Biblical event of accepting the Torah, the Jewish Bible, and the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. It was at this profound revelation that the Jews became a nation dedicating themselves to the service of G-d. It marks a turning point in Jewish history as in the history of mankind.
CHAG HABIKURIM – THE FESTIVAL OF FIRST FRUITS
Shavuot is also called CHAG HABIKURIM, the festival of first fruits, when the first fruits of the season – notably from THE 7 SPECIES – were brought to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
CHAG HAKATZIR – CELEBRATING THE HARVEST
Another name for Shavuot is CHAG HAKATZIR, the festival of reaping, which marks the end of the WHEAT harvest in the Land of Israel.
THE CUSTOMS OF SHAVUOT
MEGILAT RUTH, the Book of Ruth, is read on Shavuot. The story relates to the holiday with its description of the BARLEY and WHEAT harvest. It also unfolds the unique story of Ruth’s acceptance of the Jewish faith. Ruth was the great-grandmother of King David.
It is customary to spend all night studying in the synagogue to reinforce one’s devotion and faith. It is also traditional to decorate the home and synagogue with flowers and greenery to enhance the holiday and reminisce about harvest times.
Another wide-spread custom is the eating of dairy dishes on Shavuot. There are varied explanations for this custom. A spiritual explanation compares the Torah, the Jewish Bible, to milk. “Like honey and milk (the Torah) lies under your tongue” (Song of Songs 4:11). Just as milk has the ability to sustain the human body, the Torah provides all the spiritual nourishment necessary for the human soul. The Land of Israel is also likened to a land of milk and honey.
Wishing you a Happy Shavuot!
