TU BISHVAT – THE NEW YEAR OF TREES
Tu Bishvat, referred to as Rosh Hashanah Lailanot, i.e.,The New Year of Trees, is observed on the 15th day of the Jewish month Shvat. Nestled in mid-winter, before the onset of spring, it revels in nature’s glory. In Israel, the blooming of the Shkedia, i.e., the almond tree, usually coincides with the holiday and delicate pink blossoms can often be spotted on Tu Bishvat.
A REVIVAL OF NATURE
Tu Bishvat celebrates a revival of nature. New trees are planted, and it is customary to eat fruit grown in the Land of Israel as well as dried fruit and nuts.

On Tu Bishvat, special attention is given to the Seven Species mentioned in the Torah, the Hebrew Bible. THE 7 SPECIES, Shiv’at HaMinim, are: WHEAT, BARLEY, GRAPES, FIGS, POMEGRANTES, OLIVES and DATES. They are abundant in the Land of Israel and in ancient times were acceptable offerings of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. These species offer an aesthetic and nutrient rich addition for creating unique cuisine.
