Rosh Hashanah Symbols Simanim Explained
What Are Rosh Hashanah Simanim?
Simanin are literally signs or symbols that are designed to emphasize the new year’s aspirations. Delicious morsels of food are paired with designated blessings meant to convey the new year’s wishes. Though traditions and the selected foods may vary, the convictions persist while preserving a stable source of hope.
Jewish holiday food is often noted for its symbolism: oil on Hanukkah, dairy on Shavuot and, of course, the renowned Passover’s Seder Plate. All are linked to the holiday’s past story.
But when it comes to celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of a new Jewish year, our prospects are set forward. We envision the best year possible for us as individuals, for the Jewish nation and for the entire world. We look forward with hope to the unwritten stories that are yet to come.
What Do The Simanim Symbolize?
In short, hope. Hope for goodness, prosperity and peace. A desire to reinforce our wishes and convictions for a happy and sweet new year.
At its best, food is comforting; taste is memorable and can have an uplifting impact on our mood. The craving for a sweet new year often materializes through the use of honey. Other symbolic motifs are linked to the food shape or structure (for example: round or plentiful) or to the phonetic sound that is pronounced in Hebrew or Aramaic (ancient Hebrew). Bound together, they form the simanim ceremony – a unique way to voice, share and honor our individual and collective wishes for the upcoming year.
Wishing you a sweet. healthy and meaningful new year!
Yours,
