Exploring Sukkot
What Is Sukkot?
Sukkot is the third holiday of the Jewish month Tishre. It follows Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and is observed from the 15th till the 23rd of Tishre. At the end of Sukkot comes Shemini Atzeret, literally the eighth day of assembly. Sukkot precedes Simchat Torah.
Sukkot is one of the three Jewish holidays called SHLOSHET HAREGALIM. On Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot it was customary for the Jews to gather and celebrate in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
What Is The Meaning Of Sukkot?
Sukkot intertwines commemoration, thanksgiving and nature. It bridges between past redemption and future hope.
Sukkot is the plural form of Sukkah, i.e., a hut that is reminiscent of the ones used by the Jews on their way to the Land of Israel. As such, it commemorates the liberation from Egypt and the desert journey to freedom.
What Are The Customs Of Sukkot?
Sukkot, also called CHAG HA’ASIF, is the biblical festival of harvest, The Feast of Ingathering, and is observed as a thanksgiving holiday.
The customs of Sukkot incorporate vivid colors, pleasant scents and meaningful rejoicing.
It is customary to invite guests to the Sukkah. According to Jewish tradition, each of the days of Sukkot a distinguished Biblical guest or USHPIZIN is symbolically invited to the Sukkah.
The Four Species – Arba’at Haminim
Four representatives of nature are incorporated into the prayer ceremonies to express thanksgiving. They are called ARBA’AT HAMINIM, i.e., The Four Species. The ETROG, a form of citrus fruit is waved together with the LULAV, a palm branch bound with HADDAS, myrtle and ARAVA, willow.

The Seven Species – Shivat Haminim
A beautiful tradition is to hang THE 7 SPECIES in the sukkah. The decorated sukkah and the aromatic plants create a special atmosphere that enhances the festivities. Kosher Create offers free recipes featuring the seven species in a variety of delicious healthy dishes and desserts.
The branches of DATE palm trees are traditionally used on the Sukkot holiday as a covering for the sukkah and for the symbolic lulav.
