Simchat Tora Overview
What Is Simchat Torah?
Simchat Torah literary means the happiness of the Torah, i.e., the Jewish Bible. It celebrates the completion of reading the Torah.
When Is Simchat Torah Observed?
Simchat Torah follows the holiday of Sukkot. It concludes the four holidays of the month Tishre – Chagei Tishre.
How Is Simchat Torah Celebrated?
Simchat Torah is notable for rejoicing in the Torah, the Jewish Bible. Special processions, called Hakafot, take place while holding the Torah Scrolls. It is customary to wave colorful flags. The annual cycle of public Torah readings is completed on that day. A new cycle begins with the book of Breishit, i.e., Genesis and the creation of the world. A new Beginning.
